North West Evening Mail Launches Fighting for Furness Campaign
The North-West Evening Mail has launched a campaign to fight for jobs, opportunities and economic progress across Furness.
The Fighting for Furness campaign aims to highlight why the Government can’t afford to ignore the area, and aims to increase employment opportunities and improve transport links.
As part the campaign, the Evening Mail is calling on individuals, groups and firms across the area to show their backing for Furness Enterprise after it was announced on Monday it could no longer continue due to lack of funds.
Since it was set up in 1991, Furness Enterprise has created more than 10,000 new private sector jobs, safeguarded thousands more and was behind the campaign for a new bypass on the A590 at Newton, the Evening Mail reported.
Unless funding is found, the agency will close in August. The Evening Mail has created a Government e-petition and will also be collecting letters of support from businesses and individuals.
The campaign has already received support from large employers in the area such as Centrica and BAE Systems Maritime.
