The Herald Overturns Name Ban for Two Teenage Burglars
Two young Plymouth troublemakers were named after The Herald applied to have reporting restrictions granting them anonymity removed.
At a Plymouth Magistrates’ Court youth court hearing last week the pair pleaded guilty to burglary offences.
The Herald’s court reporter Stuart Abel handed a letter to the judge arguing that the pair should be named because of their behaviour and its impact upon the community.
The judge then lifted the Section 49 order which automatically grants anonymity to defendants who appear in the youth courts.
Stuart said: “Regardless of whether somebody is 16 or 26 people living in tight knit communities are often living in fear of youths who harass them and burgle their homes.
“They need to know that the law is dealing with them.”
