The top 20 publishers now account for 87% of all regional and local newspaper titles in the UK, and 97% of the total weekly audited circulation.  There are 87 regional newspaper publishers, 38 of whom own just one title.

The most recent acquisitions have been Iliffe News & Media of the St Neots, St Ives and Huntingdon Town Criers and the St Neots Community News from Johnston Press in Januuary 2009.

Consolidation has left the industry in the hands of regional press ‘specialists’ who have reinvested heavily in their core newspaper business.
