Ownership, Mergers & Acquisitions

The top 20 publishers now account for 87% of all regional and local newspaper titles in the UK, and 97% of the total weekly audited circulation.  There are 87 regional newspaper publishers, 38 of whom own just one title.

The most recent acquisitions have been Archant of the Kosmedia Publishing titles in June 2010 and Trinity Mirror of the Manchester Evening News from Guardian Media Group in January 2010.

Consolidation has left the industry in the hands of regional press ‘specialists’ who have reinvested heavily in their core newspaper business.
