When Evening Press reporter Alex Lloyd answered the news desk phone last Wednesday, she expected to speak to someone with information on a siege story she was busy investigating. What the 23-year-old didn't expect was to speak to the man at the centre of the gun siege while his house was surrounded by armed police. With one of her colleagues already at the scene, Lloyd was in the newsroom researching the story when she received the call which brought her even closer to the action. The man told Alex that he had only a replica gun and was reluctant to comply with police demands to leave his house as he "didn't think (he) was doing anything wrong". Claims later emerged that the man, who has since been released without charge, had boasted to his girlfriend's 17-year-old son that he had a gun in the house so the boy could feel safe. |

Alex's newsroom colleague Charlotte Percival was praised for her sensitive reporting of the tragic death of a 23-year-old man, Daniel Addeyman, who collapsed and died at his home. In Percival's front page report she included tributes from the dead man's former teachers, and the Evening Press was later invited to cover the funeral. An acknowledgement later appeared in the Evening Press's classified section from Daniel's family thanking Charlotte and her colleagues for their "sensitive reporting and discreet coverage of Dan's celebration of life." York Evening Press editor, Kevin Booth said of the promising young reporters: "Both girls should be very proud of an impressive start to their careers. They have shown thorough professionalism, great maturity and excellence in their work and, in my opinion, have the skills needed to be successful reporters." |
