New Chairman for Portfolio Audience Group
Alan Harris, managing director of the Express & Star, Wolverhampton, has agreed to take over as chairman of the NS Portfolio Audience Group. The previous chairman, Mark Rix (MEN) has stepped down due to increased work commitments. Like Mark, Alan is a member of the Marketing Committee, to which the Portfolio Audience Group reports.

EC Extends Inquiry Into
Google-DoubleClick Deal
The European Commission has extended the deadline for its inquiry into Google’s proposed £1.5 billion purchase of online ad company DoubleClick from 26 October to 13 November, to test out Google’s suggested remedies to possible competition issues. >> Full story

BBC Radio 4 Programme to Discuss Local Press as a Multi-Platform Medium
The use of new technology by the local press will be the subject of discussion for a new two-part series to be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 this month. Former Press Gazette editor and regional press reporter Philippa Kennedy is to present the programme, ‘Read All About It’, which will investigate the transition of the local press into a multi-platform medium.

Crime Reporter Lands 12 Splashes in a Row
Leon Watson, crime reporter for the South London Press, has racked up 12 consecutive front page leads with a month-long series of articles reporting on South London’s unsolved murders. Writing for the twice-weekly paper, Watson followed the Met’s investigation of five murders, securing an interview with the specialist shooting team Operation Trident and exclusive pictures of a police raid that led to the imprisonment of a notorious local gang.

Grassroots Pull-Out Spells Success for Cambridge Evening News
After three years in the making, Cambridge Evening News has launched a grassroots youth sport eight-page pull-out named YouthScene Sport, which will follow the activities of local sports clubs and school teams in the city. Sponsored by Barclays, YouthScene Sport will be inserted in the Saturday edition of Cambridge Evening News. >> Full story

New Light for the Torch Thanks to
Milford Mercury
A three-month long campaign organised by the Milford Mercury to save funds for local theatre the Torch has reaped rewards, following a town council decision to reinstate its financial support after threatening to cut it by half. Milford Haven Town Council met last week to discuss plans that would see the Torch’s funds cut from £6,500 to £3,250, a move which could have in turn jeopardised a six-figure Arts Council of Wales grant for the theatre.
