The Liverpool Daily Post ensured fans returning home to John Lennon Airport after the Champions League final were met with the story of their team's victory by printing extra copies in a 2am print run.

Thousands of extra copies were printed along with an eight-page supplement featuring comment, pictures and reaction from Istanbul in Turkey, where the cup final took place.

The Post sent three reporters to the stadium to cover the final, which saw Liverpool pull back from a 3-0 reverse at half time to win on penalties after extra time.

Dedicated staff worked throughout the night to pull the first five pages of the paper and fill them with coverage of the triumph instead.

Acting editor Rob Irvine said: "We sent two staff sports writers, a news reporter and photographer to Istanbul. This gave us a unique local perspective on the match and ensured that our readers enjoyed the high quality journalism they expect whenever we report on Liverpool FC or Everton.

"Our readers respect and enjoy our coverage - it was great to watch breakfast television the morning after the game and see fans returning to Liverpool John Lennon Airport rushing to get their copies of the Daily Post."

The Liverpool Echo, the Post's sister paper, also featured coverage of the win, with 25 pages dedicated to the game, including a 12-page pull-out, in a 6.30am print run this morning.

Assistant editor Andy Edwards said: "We'd planned in advance that the various key people would come in as soon as the match had finished, so the reporters and photographers were all in the office by midnight.

"We were also out on the streets of Liverpool where we were able to get the reaction from the bars and pubs across the city. We also encouraged supporters to send in pictures via their mobile phones, which we'll publish in tomorrow's special edition."

The eight-page supplement on the 7pm victory parade will also involve an early print run to bring readers coverage of their winning team.
