Legal & Lobbying

The Newspaper Society is the voice of the regional and local press. It pursues its members’ interests in Whitehall, Westminster and Brussels on the very wide range of issues that concern the newspaper industry.

The NS’s PERA department gathers the Society's government and legal affairs, advertising control, agency recognition, employment affairs and training activities together under one umbrella.

It offers core membership services, including information provision, representation and lobbying, as well as unique individual legal advice, consultancy and training services.

The Political, Editorial and Regulatory Affairs Committee oversee the lobbying work of the Society on UK and EU legislative initiatives of importance to the newspaper industry.

The NS employment affairs team lobby to represent members' views on proposed employment legislation.  It lobbies directly to government or through its membership of the specialist employment committee at the CBI

In addition to core information services, and online publications, PERA legal advice services cover employment law, media law and advertisement copy and editorial law. They offer fast practical, individual legal advice.  The services are available to NS members by annual subscription.
