Reporting Restrictions in the Crown Court

The Judicial Studies Board guidelines draw special attention to the need for justice to be carried out in public and the importance of media reporting to inform the public. They spell out the occasions when reporting restrictions are mandatory and remind judges of the need to consider the application of discretionary restrictions only when they are really necessary.
The guidelines result from an initiative by the Rt. Hon Lord Justice Judge, Senior Presiding Judge of England and Wales and joint work by representatives of the judiciary, Newspaper Society, Society of Editors and Judicial Studies Board.
