JICREG Training

Jic-in-a-box, JICREG Mapping and related software packages can be very powerful tools when selling regional and local media advertising space and the systems are already extensively used by many local advertisers, agencies and publishers to help plan, buy and sell local advertising. It is therefore very important for all advertising sales staff to fully understand JICREG and to be aware of exactly what data is available and how it can be used to best advantage.

Using these software packages you can:

  • See the coverage of all local newspapers and the majority of local newspaper websites within any area, including local catchment and drive time areas.
  • Show the combined, net audience figures for local newspapers and their websites.
  • Show the net reach and frequency of a local media campaign, and demonstrate how the cover could be improved by changing the papers used and/or insertion levels.

The NS can offer half-day in-centre training courses designed to ensure that advertising sales staff have an understanding of the background, and methodology used by JICREG; understand what data is available; how the data can be accessed; and how it can be used to build advertising sales arguments. Examples of data for the local market will be analysed in some detail.

The presentation will also show examples of relevant regional data from NS research projects such as Loving Local, and the IPA Touchpoints survey. Data from these surveys can help build the case for advertising in the local press and their websites.

The training sessions are designed to last 2 to 3 hours including some practical work, and ideally the number of delegates should be limited to a maximum of 15.

Cost - a charge of £700 per session, plus any travel and subsistence costs.

Journalism Training

Although journalists are intrinsic to the process, producing a newspaper involves a whole host of other jobs - advertising representatives, newspaper sales teams, graphic designers, photographers, page planners, typesetters, IT professionals, web masters, printers, distribution executives, accountants, secretarial and reception staff, and managerial staff.

Besides fielding enquiries from would-be journalists, the Newspaper Society also takes a leading role in the continuous development of professional qualifications in newspaper journalism and is a constituent member of the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ).

Trainees enter the industry through a variety of routes. Some are recruited directly by regional or local newspapers and carry out basic training under the terms of an in-house training contract.

However, about 50 per cent of the industry's editorial trainees are recruited from one-year full-time vocational post A-level courses held in colleges accredited by the NCTJ, some also being specifically tailored for graduates.
